Beloved Hollywood star Meryl Streep has been in Spain this week ahead of the ceremony to collect her Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts 2023 this Friday, presented by Princess Leonor of Spain.

During her visit to the Mediterranean country, Streep has caused a sensation with her dancing, famous friends and comparisons in interviews to Taylor Swift.

It was the acclaimed Spanish director, Pedro Almodóvar, who first put forward Meryl’s name for the Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts, a proposal that was eagerly taken up by the Princess Leonor and her team of advisers.

As part of the ‘Awards Week’ cultural programme in the run-up to the award ceremony at Oviedo’s Campoamor Theatre, a gala that will also be attended by the King, Queen and Princesses of Spain, Meryl has been spotted dancing merrily to the sound of traditional Asturian bagpipes (‘gaitas’) outside her hotel.

The actress also joined an event where she talked to teachers and school students about the decisions she has taken in her career, and another talk hosted by fellow megastar Antonio Banderas in which, as soon as she entered the venue, she said was impressed by the standing ovation she received and felt like Taylor Swift.

Streep also met with students from the Higher School of Dramatic Arts (ESAD) of the Principality of Asturias, who performed scenes from Spanish theatre in tribute to the actress.

Also present at the awards ceremony today for the 43rd edition of the Princess of Asturias Award will be athlete Eliud Kipchoge (Princess of Asturias Award for Sports), writer Haruki Murakami (Princess of Asturias Award for Literature) and the researchers Jeffrey Gordon, E. Peter Greenberg and Bonnie L. Bassler (Princess of Asturias Award for Scientific and Technical Research).
