Mojácar hosts packed September of archaeology, workshops and guided tours
Several events are planned throughout the month, including special activities for children and guided tours of the archaeological site
If you’ve ever wanted to get a little closer to Mojácar’s history, September is a good time to do it, with a full programme of cultural activities taking place around the town.
The programme has something for a range of ages, from hands-on workshops and interactive games for children to guided tours and an exhibition showcasing the results of this year’s archaeological campaign.
Things get underway on Wednesday September 2 with a handmade soap workshop at the Mojácar Public Fountain, starting at 7pm. It’s a chance to try your hand at a traditional craft and perhaps head home smelling a little more fragrant than when you arrived!
Children are also being catered for, with a creative interactive game about Mojácar la Vieja taking place at the Guadalinfo centre in the Multi-Purpose Centre. The activity starts at 5pm and is aimed at children aged 8 to 14.
There will also be a chance to get involved with one of the area’s traditional activities later in the month. On Wednesday September 9 and Wednesday September 23, the organisers will be inviting visitors to “come wash with us at La Fuente”, with both activities starting at 7pm at the Mojácar Public Fountain.
Younger visitors can get involved in an Explorer’s Booklet Workshop on Wednesday September 16. Taking place at the Senior Citizens’ Hall from 6pm, the activity is aimed at children aged 5 to 11 and offers an interactive way for them to discover more about Mojácar.
The following day, Thursday September 17, there will be an Archaeological Ceramics Workshop at the same venue, beginning at 6pm.
For those who would rather explore the archaeological site itself, guided tours are scheduled for the weekend of September 19 and 21. There will be one morning tour on Saturday September 19 at 10am, while Sunday September 21 will have two sessions, at 10am and 7pm.
Places on the guided tours are limited to a maximum of 50 people, so anyone hoping to take part will need to register in advance.
The month will finish with an opportunity to see what archaeologists have uncovered during the 2026 campaign. An exhibition presenting the results will be held at the Public Fountain of Mojácar at 8pm, giving visitors the chance to find out more about the work taking place at Mojácar la Vieja and the discoveries made during this year’s excavation.
The programme offers a slightly different way to experience Mojácar, combining history and archaeology with activities that make the subject accessible and enjoyable for visitors of all ages.
