Molina secures top spot as Murcia’s richest town with San Javier climbing fast
Income figures reveal shifting fortunes across the Region of Murcia’s municipalities

Molina’s income grew by nearly 3% from the previous year, standing €1,712 ahead of Murcia, which holds second place with €30,979. These two towns remain the only ones in the region where average incomes exceed €30,000.
Cartagena reclaims third place with an average income of €29,082, regaining ground lost the previous year to Las Torres de Cotillas. That municipality has dropped to fifth after seeing its average income fall to €26,506 from €28,115. Meanwhile, San Javier strides upwards to fourth place, increasing its income to €28,369 from €26,844 in 2022. Alcantarilla rounds out the top six on €25,392.
The remainder of the top 10 towns hover around the €24,000 mark, including La Unión, Alhama de Murcia, San Pedro del Pinatar, and Torre Pacheco. Notably, Lorca, the third most populous municipality, ranks 14th with €23,641.
At the other end of the scale are the region’s poorest towns. Moratalla sits lowest with an average income of €19,801, followed closely by Albudeite (€19,940) and Ricote (€20,006). Mazarrón, despite being the eleventh largest town, is 39th for income, at €20,507.
These figures paint a varied economic landscape across Murcia, with some municipalities improving their standing while disparities remain. It offers a valuable snapshot of the region’s financial health and changing fortunes.
Murcia as a whole ranks low nationally, positioned fourth from last among Spain’s autonomous communities for average income. The regional average of €27,013 falls below Spain’s national average of €31,333. By comparison, neighbouring Valencia holds a slightly higher average income of €28,452.
National leaders in wealth continue to be concentrated in Madrid and Catalonia. The Community of Madrid records an average income of €40,801, well ahead of Catalonia’s €35,925. Pozuelo de Alarcón, Madrid, remains the richest municipality in Spain for the tenth year running, with an average declared income of €88,011. It is followed by Boadilla del Monte (€70,869) and Sant Just Desvern in Barcelona (€67,265).
This latest data from across the country illustrates the persistent income gap across Spain, where salaries in wealthy municipalities can be nearly seven times higher than those in the poorest areas.
