ARCHIVED - Monuments and shop displays in Spain told to switch off lights at 10pm to save energy
Cities and towns across Spain will be plunged into darkness to save electricity in measures that are due to last until November 2023
Spain has approved law on economic sustainability measures, which includes a Shock Plan for Energy Saving that requires administrative buildings, public buildings and shops to keep their air conditioning at no lower than 27ºC and their heating no higher than 19ºC to reduce energy consumption.
The aim of these measures, which will be in force until November 2023, is to facilitate compliance with European commitments arising from the conflict in Ukraine.
Another of the measures to save energy that the access doors to the premises of public buildings and shops will have to install automatic closing devices to ensure that the cool air doesn’t get out, while public officials are being urged to ditch their ties in an effort to keep cool in these heatwaves.
But the measure which is perhaps causing the most controversy is that, at the behest of the EU, lights in shop windows and on public monuments like castles and museums must be turned off at 10pm.
Some who are being told to turn off their lights are furious, but in the current crises – both economic and environmental – it seems like a small sacrifice (if it can really be called that) to make for the sake of the planet’s precious resources.
Others are miffed that the Spanish president should announce these measures and then immediately fly in his private chopper, burning up 180 kilos of kerosene for a journey of just 25 kilometres.
At the same time, private houses will be made to have their boilers and thermal installations revised by December 31, 2022, if the last one was done before January 1, 2021.
Spain’s third vice-president and minister for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, said that the country “cannot afford to lose a single kilowatt-hour” of energy.
