ARCHIVED - Planet Earth is in the red: today we have used up all the natural resources allocated for 2022
In little more than 200 days, humans have exhausted the natural resources that should last the entire year
The natural resources available to planet Earth for all of 2022 have officially run out on Thursday July 28, otherwise known as Earth Overshoot Day, meaning that for the rest of this year, the planet will be in the red. This is according to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), who have pointed out that in just over 200 days we have exhausted our quota of natural supplies.
Of course, not all countries have the same energy use, but Spain is on a downward spiral: it entered into debt with the planet on May 12 this year, a full 13 days earlier than in 2021, and the date just keeps coming forward across the globe.
The Spanish government has long been an advocate of implementing sustainable measures to slow climate change, but the country isn’t faring great in its consumption of natural resources.
Earth Overshoot Day is the date on which humanity's demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what the Earth can regenerate in that same year. The date is calculated by the Global Footprint Network, an international research organization than analyses the worldwide evolution of two parameters: biocapacity (or biological regeneration capacity) and ecological footprint (our demand for resources).
The conservation director of WWF Spain, Enrique Segovia, stressed that this day of such serious overcapacity should serve as a reminder to all nations and citizens that our current rate of production and consumption simply isn’t sustainable, and is one of the main causes of the destruction of our planet and the climate crisis.
To remedy the situation, Mr Segovia has urged world leaders to “urgently and courageously” address this overuse of natural resources.
“We can all help stop the ecological deficit by making better decisions in our daily lives,” he concluded.
