ARCHIVED - More than 20 million affected by delays and cancelled flights in Spain last year
The UK tops Spain in the ranking, as 35% of all passengers endured problems with their flights
Despite being ranked as one of the top European countries for on-time flights in 2022, 23% of all passengers who travelled through Spanish airports last year suffered some kind of interruption, with delays and cancellations affecting almost 22 million travellers in all.
Between cabin crew strikes, lengthy security checks and a shortage of ground staff, air travel was marked by scenes of chaos at the height of the summer, and passengers navigating Victoria and Castellón faced the most disappointment, as they reported problems with 40% and 35% of their flights, respectively.
Palma de Mallorca’s reputation also took a beating in 2022, with 3.5 million travellers facing delays, cancellations or other issues.
And of the huge number of customers inconvenienced, only one and a half million were entitled to financial compensation, according to analysis carried out by Airhelp.
If the situation was bad in Spain, it was mirrored by problems in Europe, where constant work stoppages at airports caused flight delays for one in three passengers – that’s more than 225 million travellers.
In the months of June and July, more than 40% of all customers experienced some sort of trouble with their flights.
The dubious award for most travellers affected goes to the UK, as continuous strikes completely grounded or delayed 32 million people, 35% of the country’s total air passengers.
Britain’s poor record for 2022 is followed by Germany, where 26 million travellers suffered delays and Turkey, with more than 22 million passengers affected.
In terms of overall flights which were axed or took off late, the Netherlands takes the top spot, followed closely by the UK and Ireland.
