ARCHIVED - Spanish airlines take top four spots on European punctuality leader board
UK flights are far more likely to experience delays than Spanish airlines according to last year’s data
It may come as a bit of a surprise given the unending cabin crew, pilot and ground handling staff strikes last year, but the Spanish airlines have taken not only first place, but the top four spots in the list of carriers in Europe least likely to be affected by delays.
Based on stats from 2022, aviations analytics company Cirium compiled two lists – one global and one based solely in Europe – of the best airports and airlines for avoiding delays and sadly, British carriers weren’t featured on either. The UK, like Spain, has been swamped by industrial action for the past 12 months and Border Force strikes are still ongoing in several airports and ports.
Cirium has yet to release information on any of the spots below the top ten but from the available data, a minimum of 25% of all flights operated by UK airlines were delayed in 2022.
Spain, on the other hand, has dominated the European leader board: Iberia airlines took the top spot with 85.87% of its flights running on schedule, followed by Air Europa, 84.1% of whose flights arrived on time. Next in the ranking is Iberia Express, with 83.8% of planes touching down on time and in fourth place is Vueling, at 82.04%.
On a global scale, Azul Brazilian Airlines was found to be the most punctual airline in the world, with an 88.93% arrive-on-time record, followed by two carriers from Japan, All Nippon Airways (88.61%) and Japan Airlines (88%).
