ARCHIVED - More than 300,000 visitors descended on Murcia campsites and tourist accommodations in 2022
Visitors to Murcia stayed on campsites longer than anywhere else in Spain

The tourism industry in Spain rebounded nicely last year as travel restrictions were gradually lifted and the Region of Murcia enjoyed its share of the booming trade. A total of 380,631 travellers descended on the community in 2022, making up an impressive 2,275,487 overnight stays in alternative tourist accommodations like apartments, campsites, rural houses and hostels.
Around a third of the 2,250 tourist apartments in Region were occupied by visitors from abroad and the average traveller stayed 5.11 days, which is just slightly lower than the national average of 5.37 days.
But where Murcia really stands out is in the popularity of campsites last year. The Region offers stunning accommodation for those looking for something a little bit different, and in 2022 some 155,908 travellers opted for this alternative holiday, 105,192 of them Spanish while 50,716 were from abroad.
Crucially, the average stay was 8.10 days, the highest figure of all the autonomous communities in Spain.
During the past year, 695,701 plots were occupied, with the popularity rising from 39.9% during the week to 41.1% at weekends.
A total of 37,108 travellers decided to get off the beaten track last year and chose rural accommodations, which were less popular with foreigners who accounted for just 4,919 of the visitors. These breaks in the country typically lasted 2.79 days on average.
According to INE data, the 8 hostels distributed throughout the Region offered 739 beds and housed 20,930 travellers – 15,745 nationals and 5,181 foreigners. The occupancy rate was 21.3%, reaching 30.2% on weekends.
In Spain as a whole, overnight stays in non-hotel tourist accommodation increased by 53.2% during the first eleven months of 2022 compared to the same period of the previous year. Cumulatively, the number of stays in rural tourism establishments and hostels actually beat the 2019 figures.
