Mother and daughter die after car plunges into sea at Cádiz ferry port
Two men were also injured in the horror accident at the port of Algeciras as the family waited to board a ferry to Morocco
A mother and her daughter have died after the car they were travelling in plunged into the sea at the port of Algeciras, Cádiz, in the early hours of Wednesday morning, September 2.
Two men who were also in the Audi A4 were injured in the incident, with one of them, a man in his seventies, reportedly in serious condition.
The four passengers were Moroccan nationals who lived in the province of Segovia and had been travelling to Morocco. They were due to board a ferry to Tangier when the tragedy happened shortly after 12.30am at the Galera dock, where vehicles wait to board ferries.
According to police sources, the car had passed through the initial police checks without any problems before reaching the ferry terminal. The passengers then stopped in the designated waiting area while they waited for their ferry to be ready for boarding.
For reasons that remain unclear, the car then continued moving forward at a steady speed instead of stopping. It crossed the edge of the dock and plunged into the sea.
There was some fog at the time, although police sources said visibility wasn't severely affected. Investigators are considering whether poor visibility or driver error could have caused the accident.
“The car kept going until it fell into the sea,” a police source at the port said.
The two men, who had been sitting in the front of the car, managed to escape from the vehicle after it hit the water. Both were injured and taken to hospital by emergency services, with the older man suffering serious injuries.
The two women, who were sitting in the back, weren't able to get out. They were later recovered from inside the submerged vehicle by divers from the Guardia Civil's GEAS (Special Underwater Activities Group), who had been called to the scene. Both women were already dead.
The tragedy happened at one of Spain's busiest ferry ports for traffic to Morocco. Algeciras handled more than 900,000 passengers and 251,000 vehicles during the outbound phase of this year's Operation Crossing the Strait. However, the family wasn't travelling as part of the official operation.
