ARCHIVED - Motorway tolls increase by 1.97 per cent in Spain
Several state-owned highways in Spain will see rises of up to 2.99%
The new year has only just begun and already consumers are feeling the pinch in their pockets, as the cost of driving on Spain’s highways was hiked up once again on Saturday January 1. According to the Ministry of Transport, an increase of 1.97% will be applied to the current rates of state-dependent roads in line with the continued growth of the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
Crucially, the AP-7, AP-6, AP-46 and AP-9 will be subject to additional increases to cover maintenance costs and to compensate for not previously implementing agreed rate hikes, among other things.
The toll at the AP-7 motorway which connects Alicante and Cartagena will rise by 2.99%; the AP-6 Villalba-Adanero road will increase by 2.84%; the AP-46 motorway, in the Alto de Las Pedrizas-Málaga section will increase by 2.99%, and on the AP-9, El Ferrol-Portuguese Border, the cost for drives will rise by 2.99 %.
The news will come as another major blow to transport companies in Spain who only narrowly avoided pre-Christmas strikes over rates of pay and compensation, and the already over-burdened motorist can look forward to yet more expenses in 2022 as the price of fuel is set to continue rising.
On a positive note, highways managed by the State Society of Land Transport Infrastructures (Seittsa) are not included in the price hikes.
In addition, official sources have confirmed that the General State Budgets for this year aim to apply 92.5 million euros in discounts for road users and haulage companies.
