ARCHIVED - Murcia avoids worst of heatwave but still sees 39-degree temperatures: Weather forecast July 11-17
The heat will be less intense in Murcia than elsewhere in Spain, but it’ll still be hot
Spain is in the grip of its second heatwave and much of the country is on orange alert this week for extreme temperatures that will exceed 40ºC/104ºF in some places.
Luckily, Murcia will escape the worst of the heat and be spared weather warnings, at least for now. The maximum temperature expected in the Region this week is 39ºC, which is still very hot, and the minimum temperature at night will be in the high teens.
For now, there are no thunderstorms forecast at all, signalling that the heat is likely to continue beyond this week and keep rising next week.
In addition, daytime windspeeds will not surpass 20kmh at their fastest and there will be little to no cloud cover at all, meaning the heat will be unrelenting.
In addition to the usual heat safety precautions, Spain’s Minister for Ecological Transition is asking that people take it easy on the air conditioning so that electricity prices don’t skyrocket, just as they did during the June heatwave when increased energy usage meant energy prices shot up by ten euros in 24 hours.
While the Region of Murcia is not actually in a drought and a hosepipe ban has not yet been announced, the Segura basin, which provides much of the Region’s fresh water supply, is on “pre-alert” because the reservoirs are at less than half of their capacity.
What’s more, extreme weather events are becoming more common and scientists are predicting that droughts will become more intense and frequent until the end of the 21st century.
