Murcia bans the use of mobile phones in schools
Children in the Region of Murcia will have to switch off their devices during school hours
Murcia has become the latest region in Spain to prohibit the “improper” use of mobile phones in its classrooms. To ensure that students are focused on their studies instead of their screens, the Ministry of Education has given the green light to a proposal to expressly limit the use of mobiles during school hours, unless these devices form part of the lesson.
"The prohibition of the use of mobile phones in classrooms is something that responds to the concerns of families and the educational community, and that will favour the quality of teaching and the concentration" of the students, explained regional president Fernando López Miras.
The measure, which will be launched “immediately”, was approved during this week’s Government Council meeting one hundred days after the new government team came into power, which also touched on a number of important budgetary and environmental issues affecting the locality.
One pressing matter is the ongoing conservation of the Mar Menor, and the president assured that while the current governing parties have “differing” ideas about the best way forward, they are all committed to proving the Region of Murcia with political and institutional "stability."
Mr López Miras also clarified a controversial statement made the previous day by vice president José Ángel Antelo, who claimed that the 2024 budget for LGTBI groups would be cut. Instead, he insisted that "not a single euro" will be deducted from the money destined for equality or diversity, and further stressed that " all groups that fight for equality, including the LGTBI community, will not see a single euro withdrawn from the aid budget."
Other items on the agenda were the extension to 40 years of guarantees for young people to buy their first home, the reduction of hospital and health centre waiting lists and water shortages in the Region.
