ARCHIVED - Murcia considers closing dance floors over Christmas
The president of the Region also supports mandatory mask-wearing in public
The Region of Murcia is looking at closing off dance floors over the Christmas holidays as an additional measure to slow down the staggering increase in infections experienced in the community in recent weeks. The regional president, Fernando López Miras, said he is still hanging his hopes on the central government introducing national measures following the virtual meeting scheduled for Wednesday December 22, but if this does not come to fruition, the Covid Committee is fully prepared to advance its own limitations in Murcia.
“Among them, the closure of dance floors,” a government source confirmed.
The measure will mostly affect nightlife venues, but will also have an impact on certain bars and restaurants planning to hold Christmas and New Year parties, and establishments that host live music events. However, the president is confident that it is a way in which hospitality businesses can remain open while reducing social interaction.
Mr López Miras will also throw his support behind other regional leaders, such as Valencia’s Ximo Puig, who are calling for the reintroduction of the compulsory use of masks in public spaces, and he intends to push for a Covid Fund to strengthen local health services.
Finally, the Murcian representative intends to advocate for a pandemic law "that provides legal tools so that the autonomous communities can apply measures based on the evolution of the epidemiological situation”.
While the national health committee has been proposing capacity and gathering restrictions for communities at high and very high risk levels, Catalonia is the only community which has chosen not to wait for Wednesday’s meeting and apply for the closure of nightlife venues and the implementation of a curfew. On the other end of the scale, Madrid vehemently opposes any restrictions and maintains that governments should refrain from “prohibiting anything.”
