ARCHIVED - Murcia in favour of subsidising Spanish fuel discount
Unions are pushing the Murcia government to fund an additional 20 cents on petrol and diesel
The Union of Professionals and Self-Employed Workers of Spain (UPTA) has called on autonomous communities across the country to make “an additional effort” to lower the cost of fuel by another 20 cents per litre after the central government’s April 1 bonus failed to reduce petrol and diesel prices.
The Region of Murcia has thrown its support behind the union, insisting that it has asked the Spanish government “from the first moment of this crisis and the escalation of fuel prices to eliminate the Special Tax on Hydrocarbons and to apply the super-reduced VAT to fuels.”
The Region is expected to collect around 350 million euros in Hydrocarbon tax this year on top of the VAT amount, which is applied to the sale price of fuel.

According to the president of UPTA, Eduardo Abad, “for every litre of petrol or diesel that is poured into the tank of a vehicle, 94 cents are being collected in taxes. Of those 94 cents, 60% goes directly to the coffers of the autonomous communities, which are the only ones that have not taken the necessary measures to help the self-employed and the most needy families”.
In order to mitigate the huge impact of the price increase, the union has asked the Murcia regional government to contribute “at least another 20 cents per litre” to the discount already on offer in filling stations across the community.
“It is time for the autonomous communities to take a step forward and do what they have to do without entrusting everything to the central Administration,” he concluded.
