ARCHIVED - Murcia initiative allows consumers to recycle home cooking oil in restaurants
Bars, restaurants and catering establishments throughout the Region of Murcia are participating in the environmental initiative
Murcianos will be able to do their bit for the environment and reduce household waste as part of a new initiative launched by the General Directorate of Consumption called ‘Recycle with the hospitality industry.’ From this week, people can take their used cooking oil to participating bars, restaurants and catering establishments where it will be responsibly repurposed.
According to the president of the Region’s Federation of Hospitality and Tourism (HoyTú), Jesús Jiménez, the initiative aims to promote “more sustainable and responsible habits” within the home by encouraging and facilitating consumers “to recycle used oil comfortably at home, in bars and restaurants near their home".

To make recycling as easy as possible, the HoyTú website now has a search engine that will find your nearest participating venue by postcode. Hospitality establishments taking part will also be given a campaign poster to display in their premises.
"The objective is to make it easier for citizens to recycle the oil that is used in homes and avoid its dumping in the sink or in inappropriate places and the consequent contamination of the water,” the general director explained.
“The hoteliers will receive the containers with the oil and will include it in their usual recycling process, guaranteeing the safety of the process."
