ARCHIVED - Murcia solar plant becomes a refuge for endangered birds
Endesa’s Totana photovoltaic plant is committed to improving the environment
A photovoltaic plant in the Murcian municipality of Totana has become a refuge for dozens of bird species, many of which are endangered, by providing an ecological corridor to grow wheat and rye crops for food in addition to planting 15,000 plants that act as an ideal habitat for curlews, the lesser kestrel, the common cogujada, the magpie and the common turtle dove.
Endesa sources have highlighted the fact that the corridor attracts the birds more than the surrounding areas, which are often over cultivated, and in the first few months after its launch, the solar plant has become home to more than 25 species.
The work is not yet complete, however, as the company plans to install a new screen that will cover the three-kilometre perimeter of the plant. In addition, 20 nest boxes and several ponds will be installed over the 150 hectares of the solar farm.
Inaugurated in 2019 with 85 MW of power, the Totana photovoltaic plant is a pioneering endeavour in Spain which is dedicated to the improvement of the environment.
