Murcia unveils plans for grand new Central Plaza
The square will house the bus and train stations and incorporate Murcia's historic El Carmen
In just a few short years, the city of Murcia will boast a stunning new Central Plaza that will revolutionise the way residents and visitors travel around the city. This ambitious project has just gained momentum with the approval granted at a meeting this Monday September 16.
The plaza, which will cover an impressive 40,000 square metres and require a budget of 5.6 million euros, will be built in the very heart of the Murcia, bringing together the train and bus stations, as well as the historic El Carmen station.
The project's design will seamlessly blend modern and historic elements, creating a unique and functional space that showcases the city's rich heritage, according to the council.
In the coming weeks, the Murcia Alta Velocidad company will put the design works out to tender internationally.
According to Mayor José Ballesta, the plaza will become a "great symbol of the city" and a "meeting point and attraction" for both locals and visitors.
It will be built in the area surrounding the old station, next to the new railway station which is currently under construction and the underground bus station, which hasn't reached the design phase yet.
The Mayor emphasised that "this is a historic day for a municipality that has lived with a division from east to west."
The new plaza will feature a range of amenities, including an intermodal centre, an underground bus station and a car park. The surrounding area will also be developed for tertiary use, and the historic El Carmen station will be preserved and integrated into the new design.
