ARCHIVED - Murcia vineyards showcase their wine at ProWein Fair in Germany
37 wineries have travelled to the Dusseldorf fair with the aim of increasing exports from Murcia
The Region of Murcia has taken pride of place at the ProWein Fair in the German city of Dusseldorf this weekend, where 37 wineries including the Protected Designations of Origin (PDO) of Jumilla, Yecla and Bullas showcased their vintages.
For the three days of the festival, representatives of the Region’s vineyards will meet with buyers from all over the world with the goal of increasing exports and reaching the largest number of markets possible for the quality Murcian wine.
"In recent years we have seen how the union of producers around the Monastrell grape, the star of the Spanish southeast, has allowed us to open new business avenues and has given our wines greater prestige," explained the regional Minister of Agriculture, Antonio Luengo, who added that "the Denominations of Origin of Jumilla, Bullas and Yecla alone bring together 73% of the 38,000 hectares dedicated to the cultivation of this variety in Spain."
The local government, he said, is ever committed to the wine sector in the Region, and the "quality and tradition of one of our star products."
The Region of Murcia exported wine worth 174.3 million euros in 2021.
Following a smaller event last year due to coronavirus capacity restrictions, the world-renowned ProWein Fair has returned to prominence in 2022, highlighting the exceptional wine on offer particularly in Germany, Italy, France and Spain. Even with reduced numbers, the event last year attracted 61,500 professionals from the trade and gastronomy sector, with around 80% committing to do future business.
Part of this year’s agenda is a meeting between the Spanish ambassador to Germany and the CEO of the Institute of Foreign Trace (ICEX) with the aim of expanding the sale of wines from the Murcia Region in Germany and the Central European market.
