N-332 between Altea and Calpe reopens to traffic
The stretch of road was closed for 10 days while major works were carried out on the Mascarat tunnels
Ten days of extensive safety and improvement works at the Mascarat tunnels on Alicante’s N-332 dual carriageway between Calpe and Altea have been completed and the road has been reopened to traffic.
The stretch of highway was shut off between kilometre points 164+700 and 165+500 on Sunday May 14, and work was initially expected to take a week.
However, the project went three days over schedule, and reopened on Wednesday morning, May 24. The closure has proved a major headache for motorists travelling between Calpe and any other town in the Marina Baixa region of Alicante province, such as Altea, Benidorm and Villajoyosa, although a series of diversions were clearly signposted.
With a budget of 1.2 million euros financed by Next Generation Funds, the road works on the two Mascarat tunnels is part of a broader project that aims to modernise and improve several tunnels scattered along the N-332 in the province of Alicante. El Altet and El Campello will also be tackled in due course.
In order to reach European standards, the Ministry of Transport explained, the financing will focus on improving emergency exits, signage, beaconing, lighting, ventilation, electrical installation, fire protection, drainage, communication and traffic management.
