ARCHIVED - Neglected dog left outside to die by Murcia owner
The abused animal had to be humanely euthanised and now the Murcia man faces jail time
A heartbreaking story of blatant animal neglect has ended with a dog having to be put to sleep in Murcia. The owner of the pet failed to seek medical attention despite the obvious pain and distress the animal was in, and veterinarians had no option but to euthanise it.
The case came to light when a neighbour contacted Seprona, the Nature Protection Service of the Guardia Civil, and reported a dog that was visibly bleeding on a patio and appeared to be unable to walk. This local resident also claimed that the animal had been left outside in the paved area for several days.
When animal welfare officers arrived at the scene, the level of abuse was worse than they could have imagined: the dog, a tricolor, wire-haired fox terrier, was bleeding profusely from its genitals and could only move by dragging its back legs along the ground. The patio area where the pet had been kept was drenched in blood.
The owner of the dog wasn’t at home but officers eventually tracked him down. He told them that he couldn’t find the animal’s health card and as the dog wasn’t microchipped either, they insisted that it immediately be brought to a vet in Murcia.
The examination concluded that the animal was suffering from paresis of the hind limbs, caused as a result of an infection of the uterus. The vet clearly observed a large amount of pus, as well as pale mucous membranes and tachycardia. The injuries were so severe that the vet deemed them irreversible, and the decision was made to humanely euthanise the dog.
As the owner failed to seek any veterinary care for his pet, the Guardia Civil will charge him with a crime of animal abuse.
Since the Animal Protection Law was updated, abuse or neglect carries much harsher penalties. If convicted, the Murcia man could face a fine of between 6,001 and 30,000 euros, up to 18 months in prison and a 4-year disqualification from owning or working with animals.
