Netflix Spain eliminates basic plan: These are the new prices
The streaming giant scrapped its most popular (and cheapest) plan in Spain on October 23
Many TV fans were caught off guard on October 23 when Netflix announced it would be scrapping its basic streaming package for all new subscribers and those wanting to change their subscription. For now, people who already have a contract will be allowed to keep the basic plan but for everyone else, there’s been big changes to the pricing structure.
"Our immediate priority is to develop our advertising membership so that Netflix becomes an essential purchase for advertisers," the platform reported in an official statement last week. Of course, what this means for viewers is more ads or a heftier price tag to avoid them.
As of October 23, there are now three options for new subscribers to Netflix in Spain:
- Standard with ads: 5.49 euros per month.
- Standard: 12.99 euros per month.
- Premium: 17.99 euros per month.
Standard plan with ads
This is essentially another version of the basic plan and while it’s by far the cheapest, subscribers will have to put up with advertising before and during most TV series and movies. This option is currently only available in Germany, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Korea, Spain, United States, France, Italy, Japan, Mexico and the United Kingdom.
The other downside is that, due to licencing restrictions, certain shows might not be available. These will be shown with a lock icon when users search or scroll through the Netflix home screen.
On the other hand, the standard plan with ads is available in Full HD, can be used simultaneously on two devices and, from November, will allow shows to be downloaded.
Standard plan
Coming in at five euros more, the standard plan offers Full HD, the option of downloading content now to enjoy later offline and broadcasting on two devices. The most obvious difference is that this subscription comes without ads.
However, the new policy means that Netflix will charge an extra 5.99 euros per month for each additional subscriber who doesn’t live in the same house.
Premium plan
This gold-standard option allows users to watch series and movies on four different devices at the same time, but it comes with a hefty 17.99 euros price tag to match. However, for this, subscribers get an Ultra HD resolution and, of course, no advertising whatsoever.
As with the standard plan, those who opt for the more expensive option will be able to add subaccounts for an additional 5.99 euros per person per month.
