ARCHIVED - New 44-home development in Malaga becomes first to incorporate Passive House standards
The homes are built to a specific construction model that reduces energy consumption by up to 90%
Andalucia's first-ever passive house building project has recently been completed, a development of 44 homes that have been constructed using a model that reduces energy use by up to 90% compared to a traditional house.
And 95% of these innovative homes in Malaga, developed by Exxacon incorporating the Urban Litoral model, have already been sold. The Andalusian developer has invested around 14 million euros in the multi-family development with private pools.
Last year, Villa Suasana in Mijas received the title of being the first house in the region with Passivhaus Premium certification.
But what is a Passivhaus (Passive House)?
Basically, they are houses built using a model that seeks to reduce energy demand as much as possible through bioclimatic architecture. Specifically, it reduces energy consumption by 90% compared to a traditional house.
Passivhaus has five fundamental pillars: Insulation, airtightness, absence of thermal bridges, high performance windows and a ventilation system with a 95% heat recovery capacity.
Advantages of living in a passive house
In addition to saving money on energy consumption, these homes are apparently superior in terms of ventilation and when it comes to conserving heat.
Heat recovery is the key to the potential savings, as the thermal insulation eliminates energy losses and promotes controlled ventilation. The heat recovery system helps the building's own temperature to be reused to heat or cool the new air that's introduced into the home.
