New and improved low-cost Murcia-Madrid trains get off to a flying start
There are now more than 7,000 weekly seats on offer between the Region of Murcia and Madrid
The swanky new S-106 Avlo trains made their debut journey from Murcia this week with 280 very comfortable passengers winging their high-speed way to Madrid and Valladolid. With this addition, Renfe will run between the Region of Murcia and the Spanish capital five times daily in each direction.
The upgraded low-cost trains can carry an impressive 507 people each, which is 41% more than the old carriages. This means that Renfe’s weekly seat offer on this route has increased drastically from 5,026 seats to 7,098.
As well as giving more people a chance to travel, the new and improved trains promise a more comfortable and relaxing journey, with cushioned seats, strong Wi-Fi signal, vending machines and plenty of space for bulky items like big suitcases and prams. The S-106s are also fully accessible, complete with adapted bathrooms for people with reduced mobility.
Murcia has two daily Avlo services, one in each direction, (the others are serviced by AVE), which stop at all stations on the route to Madrid and, from there, extend the trip to Valladolid, with a total travel time of 4 hours and 46 minutes. Renfe has sold more than 25,000 tickets for this service.
And there’s a good chance that ticket prices will come down even further, as competitor Ouigo has just announced that its own connection between the Region of Murcia and Madrid will begin on Thursday September 5, 2024.
In the meantime, Renfe is committed to gradually upgrading its services across the country and, in addition to Murcia, the S-106 trains have also been put into circulation on the Avlo route that links Valencia and Alicante with Madrid, as well as the AVE line that connects Castellón and Valencia with Gijón.
