ARCHIVED - New rural routes and trails created in Benidorm
Almost one million euros is being spent opening up the Moralet area in the Marina Baixa for public use
Work has begun creating a network of cycle and hiking routes and trails at Benidorm's El Moralet and improving accessibility for leisure and recreational activities.
The work, expected to take six months, is being carried out by Grupo Bertolin with a budget of 908,303 euros partly financed with European funds.
"This project will make the natural green area available to the public through a network of trails and cycle paths, recovering the old route of the 'trenet' as a greenway and creating spaces for leisure and recreation," explained Councillor for Sports, Mariló Cebreros, who met recently with representatives from Benidorm's cycling and athletic clubs who will help design the routes over a square kilometre of land.
The Moralet scheme is the third project initiated as part of Benidorm's 23-million-euro Sustainable Urban Development Plan (EDUSI), which include the construction of a youth hostel, camping area and interpretation centre at Séquia Mare Park, the rehabilitation of the bullring and the creation of new cultural and social spaces in the surrounding area.
The plan has received a 10-million-euro European grant and is aimed at "improving the quality of life for Benidorm residents by improving access to information technology (ICT), reducing CO2 emissions, protecting the environment and combating inequality and poverty through inclusion policies".
