New discounts in Spain for buying energy-efficient appliances
The Energy Savings Certificate System will allow companies in Spain pass the savings onto consumers
Buying a more efficient refrigerator or dishwasher, switching a gas boiler for a heat pump or installing new windows will soon be much cheaper in Spain thanks to the new system of Energy Savings Certificates (CAE) introduced by the Ministry of Ecological Transition.
While the first link in the chain will apply to companies and large businesses, the savings they make will ultimately be passed on to consumers in the form of cheaper appliances and renovations.
Here’s how it’s going to work. For every kilowatt per hour of certified savings created through the use of more efficient appliances, accredited companies will receive a CAE that they can exchange for money from the National Energy Efficiency Fund (FNEE). This is a newly-created fund that the major energy providers will contribute to annually.
What’s new is that businesses like home renovators and appliance stores will now be allowed to issue CAEs and request a refund for energy savings, and pass these savings on to their customers.
What does the new system cover?
In the residential sector, the energy saved through the purchase of high-efficiency refrigerators, refrigerator-freezers and freezers, as well as high-efficiency dishwashers and washing machines, may be exchanged for CAEs. Likewise, replacing a gas boiler with an air-air, air-water, water-water or combined heat pump will have financial benefits.
There are also several bonuses for improving the thermal insulation of homes, including the rehabilitation of more than 25% of walls, floors, ceilings and windows and replacing an air conditioning system with one that uses less power.
