ARCHIVED - New licence for over-16s in Spain to drive electric cars
A new B1 licence will allow teens in Spain to drive vehicles up to 90km/hour
Teenagers over the age of 16 in Spain will soon be given the option of obtaining a B1 licence, which will allow them to drive small electric vehicles (400 kilos) up to a maximum speed of 90km/hour. Until now, licences weren’t granted until people reached 18 years, and then they were allowed to drive cars weighing 3,500kg at up to 120km/hour.
There are also other options open to teens aged 15 and over, such as the AM card for driving quads, but the new regulations aim to give greater freedom to youngsters living in rural areas while familiarising them with driving before they get behind the wheel of a more powerful vehicle.
"It is already being applied in countries like France with good results and will favour the mobility of the youngest in rural areas, where even with all possible efforts, public transport obviously does not operate on the same terms arrive as in more urban environments," the Minister of the Interior said this week.
The date for the implementation of the new B1 licence has not yet been set, but the measure should give more than a million new drivers access to the roads.
In addition to the B1 permit for those over 16, the minister detailed other lines of action such as the "incorporation of education in safe and sustainable mobility in the school curriculum".
