Spain is spending €100 million to install hundreds more electric car chargers
The investment targets so-called “shadow zones” across Spain where there are no charge points for miles

Switching to an electric car is a big decision, not to mention a huge expense, and one of the things that puts a lot of people off is the fear of running out of juice in the middle of nowhere with no charger in sight. Spain is trying to tackle that problem head-on with a €100 million investment in 337 new fast-charging points, specifically targeting the areas where the current network has gaps.
As of May 1, Spain had 54,794 operational charging points, according to the Business Association for the Development and Promotion of Electric Mobility (AEDIVE), which sounds like a lot until you factor in that a further 16,340 installed points were out of service at the end of 2025, either broken, in poor condition or unable to connect to the electricity grid.
On top of that, there are the so-called “shadow zones”, stretches of road where drivers can travel for miles without finding anywhere to charge at all.

The new chargers are being funded through the IDAE's Moves aid programme for charging corridors, and all 337 will be fast chargers with a capacity of 150kW, making them genuinely useful for long-distance travel rather than just topping up in towns and cities.
The funding is spread across a number of companies. Wenea is receiving the largest share at almost €14.8 million across 25 projects, followed by Zunder with €13 million for 54 facilities, and the Iberdrola BP Pulse alliance with €12.2 million to establish 41 new hubs in locations including Málaga, Cáceres, Toledo, León, Jaén, Huesca, Ávila, Albacete and Badajoz.
Some of the investment will go towards reinforcing existing service stations, including sites in Madrid, Valencia and Alicante, while brand new stations will be built in locations such as Villafranca del Penedès in Barcelona, Almansa in Albacete and Verín in Ourense.
It won't solve every problem overnight, but for anyone already driving electric or thinking about making the switch, it's definitely a step in the right direction.
