ARCHIVED - Northern Ireland man dies in Tenerife hotel fall
The Belfast man’s father also died in a tragic accident in Spain five years ago
The popular holiday resort of Tenerife was the scene of a devastating accident on November 9 when Belfast man Paul McNulty died after falling down a flight of stairs at his hotel.
The 57-year-old from the Four Winds area was staying at the Los Cristianos hotel when he sustained a serious head injury. It’s understood that the father-of-three was still breathing when paramedics arrived but despite their best efforts, he died at the scene.
Paul was on a 10-day break in Tenerife with family and his sister, Andrea Matthews, said the whole gang was having “a brilliant time” before the devastating fall occurred on the last day of the holiday.
“My mummy ran down and tried to get him up but he was unresponsive,” Ms Matthews said.
“By the time I got there, the doctors were performing CPR. Me and my mummy and brother sat there with him covered in a sheet.”
Paul’s heartbroken sister described him as a man with a “heart of gold” who will be well remembered for being “the life and soul of the party”.
"Everyone remembers the way he laughed. He was friends with everybody. He was kind-hearted,” she added. “We are heartbroken. It is utter devastation and shock.”
The accident is made all the more tragic by the fact that Paul’s own father died suddenly while also holidaying in Spain just five years ago. Brian, 74, was on a trip to Benidorm in May 2017 with family when he fell ill during the FA Cup final.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital but sadly passed away the following day.
The party hotspot of Tenerife was the scene of quite a different ordeal last weekend as videos have gone viral of a vicious street brawl between England and Wales fans following a World Cup match.
