ARCHIVED - Norwegian Church of Albir kicks off the festive season with traditional Christmas fair
Each year, the seasonal fair in the Marina Alta town, Alicante province, raises funds for local social projects
The Norwegian Church of Albir got the festive season off to a colourful and charitable start with its traditional Christmas fair at the weekend, offering the opportunity to sample typical Scandinavian dishes and buy hand-made gifts whilst raising funds for social community projects.
Musical entertainment was also laid on for locals, visitors and representatives from the town hall, including Councillor for Residents, Mayte García, who thanked the church and Norwegian community "for their commitment to social causes and volunteering".
The Norwegian Church of Albir (also known as Sjømannskirken Albir) was inaugurated 25 years ago on October 13 1996, not only as a church, but also a cultural and social centre to provide support for Norwegian residents of all ages.
"The church hosts cultural, sporting, social, recreational and religious activities and workshops in order to generate coexistence and provide social support. They also help vulnerable people of all ages, whether they are tourists or Norwegian residents, and offer counselling services, volunteering or emergency assistance," explained Alfaz Council.
The Sjømannskirken (Marine Church) Network, now called the Church for Norwegians Abroad, has existed since 1864 to support Norwegian citizens living in different parts of the world.
They currently have 28 centres spread over five continents. In Spain there are seven, located in Albir-Villajoyosa, on the Costa del Sol, Mallorca, Torrevieja, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Tenerife.
In Albir, the church is led by pastors Peder Myren, who has just arrived to take over as director, and Gjerulf Kristoffer Noddeland.
