ARCHIVED - Norwegian runner dies moments after completing Malaga Half Marathon
The 58-year-old collapsed and died just after crossing the finish line at Malaga's Athletics Stadium
A Norwegian runner died minutes after completing the XXXI TotalEnergies Malaga Half Marathon on Sunday November 13, despite the efforts of emergency response teams.
In a statement, Malaga City Council confirmed that the athlete was "attended urgently" as soon as he crossed the finish line at the Athletics Stadium.
"The athlete was attended to by doctors from the two Red Cross mobile ICUs that were part of this sporting event, where he underwent cardiopulmonary resuscitation manoeuvres." Sadly, despite their efforts, the 58-year-old died at the scene.
The deceased, an experienced runner, took part in the same half marathon in 2019, a competition organised by Motorpres Ibérica and Málaga Sports and sponsored by the city council through the public company Málaga Deporte y Eventos.
The local authority assured that the event's "self-protection plan" is superior to the bare minimum required for this type of event and includes an advanced medical post at the finish line; eight ICUs, four advanced life support units and four basic life support units, as well as two 4x4 support vehicles.
A total of 54 medical staff were on hand to attend to the participants on Sunday: nine doctors, 10 nurses, 14 first aiders, 20 emergency technicians and a coordinator.
"During the course of the race, another participant had to be taken by ambulance to the Hospital Clínico Universitario Virgen de la Victoria," added the council, although there are no further details.
In the wake of the tragedy, the city council has activated the psychosocial group of Civil Protection so that both it and the Parcemasa Guidance and Psychological Support Group can assist the relatives of the deceased.
The half marathon was won by Kenyan athlete Kiptoo Chumo, who broke the race record with a time of 1:00:23, followed by his compatriot Mutai (1:02:12), and Dennis Kibet (1:02:50).
