The Murcia-based, citizen-led environmental movement ‘Por un Mar Menor Vivo’ (For a Living Mar Menor) has called attention to the presence of mud and dead animals in the Mar Menor on Thursday October 14. The animals were found on the seashore in La Manga, in front of the Arpón housing development in the municipality of San Javier.
The Department of Environment for the Region of Murcia said on Thursday morning that it was only the bodies of one fish and one bird that were removed from this stretch of La Manga, and refused to link the appearance of dead animals to the state of the lagoon.
The anoxia and chemicals in the water have caused thousands of fish to wash up on the shores in the past, prompting a vast protest march last week to fight for rights and protections for the lagoon. For their part, Por un Mar Menor Vivo claim that the state of this area of the Mar Menor has been “getting worse in a very worrying way” over the last few weeks.
“The Seprona and Environmental Agents have been warned, but there is little they can do. We wonder what the town councils of Cartagena and San Javier are doing in terms of cleaning their beaches,” they said.
