What’s on Murcia
This weekend Spain celebrates the festival of the Virgen del Pilar, the 12th October traditionally a national holiday honouring all things Spanish.
This means that there are not only plenty of institutional events, but also lots of fiestas. Here in the Region of Murcia it’s the big weekend in Los Alcázares, with the day of the Caldero taking place down on the beach, thousands of people enjoying music, food and a festive atmosphere with lots of free musical entertainment and foam party. It’s also the big weekend at La Unión, and Torre Pacheco enjoys the main acts of its fiestas this weekend, including the parade of carriages with all the floats made from rolled up paper, representing thousands of hours of work, as well as the Fiesta Rociera with those tight and frilly sevillanas dresses. Alhama de Murcia also continues its feria with F ABBA ulous World of ABBA show, FREE of charge for all to enjoy. For those who prefer a spot of shopping, there are Outlet fairs in Cartagena and Águilas, and Mula in the North-west has its monthly artisan fair in the heart of the old quarter. It’s worth scrolling through the what’s on section to look at some of the forthcoming music and classical events if you enjoy classical music and dance as there are some really good classical, operatic and ballet shows coming up later in the month. There are also plenty of new exhibitions being inaugurated at the moment, so select the subject art and exhibitions to see all of them in one place.
Active Murcia
Moratalla continues its series of scenic walks in the beautiful countryside which makes this one of the most attractive municipalities in the region, and there’s another walk in the North-west in nearby Calasparra. La Unión is inaugurating its new trialbike park near to Portmán and Lorca celebrates its annual autumn rallysprint event for those who enjoy a spot of burning rubber, then on Monday there’s another walk on offer, this time in the beautiful Sierra Espuña.

Murcia regional news
The regional parliament also approved the motion allowing the regional government to absorb the 200 million euro loan for Corvera airport into the regional deficit as a “transitory” measure whilst the processes to find a new concessionary for Corvera airport are undertaken, the idea being that the new concessionary will take on the loan when they take over the airport and open it. However, the first rumblings were heard from airport unions at san Javier who are not exactly enthusiastic about their proposed move and have threatened industrial action if the future of their members is compromised. Airport flight statistics are still not brilliant at san Javier, but they are enough to make the airport viable as it stands, and of course, Murcia is also supported by the increased traffic and routes available at Alicante. However, one good piece of news came through on Thursday in the form of property statistics, showing Murcia as having the largest percentage increase of international property sales in the country during the second quarter of the year, the low prices along the Mediterranean coastline attracting the attention of buyers once again, with some excellent value properties on offer.
There’s certainly been plenty happening across the rest of Spain this week, starting with property news.
Notary statistics have highlighted the increased interest in Spanish property from international buyers, kindling debate over whether these are due in part to legislation granting Spanish residency to foreigners buying property in Spain for over 500,000 euros. However it could also be due to the fact that prices continue to fall and Mediterranean property is edging ever closer towards the half price mark according to Tinsa. Terrorism has reared its ugly head again this week. Following a bomb attack on Zaragoza cathedral last week, a town hall in Galicia was bombed by radicals this week, possibly the same group, and pro-separatist supporters marched in their thousands to demand the release of ETA prisoners. Galicia was also the scene of a mass beaching of pilot whales, as a total of 17 whales died on two separate beaches and Cataluña has acquired a new wasp, threatening the wild honey industry in the mountainous areas of the region. The Castor gas platform off the Valencia coastline remained in the news all week as the earthquakes subsided and government ministers visited the gas platform, reassuring worried locals that the platform would remain on lockdown whilst an exhaustive analysis took place to examine the safety issues relating to any further gas injections. Protest was very much in the news this week, with abortion rights protestors gaining substantial coverage when they bared all in parliament just as the Minister heading up amendments to abortion legislation was about to answer a question, anti eviction protestors in the news when bank staff “kidnapped” their own customers during a lock in and expat protestors on the warpath as the post office in Almería causes mailbox misery for thousands of people.
