Ocean Race Europe to stop in Cartagena this August
The Port of Cartagena will be the only Spanish stopover for this exciting sailing event
At the FITUR exhibition in Madrid this week, the mayor of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo, proudly announced that the port of Cartagena will be the only Spanish stopover for the prestigious Ocean Race Europe. This international event, which will take place from August 23 to 27, marks a historic milestone for the city.
"Cartagena is a city that looks out to sea," Ms Arroyo said, encapsulating the city's deep connection to the water. This relationship is not only a source of pride but also a driving force in sports and tourism, she added.
She emphasised the city's pride "for our history and our relationship with the sea," which is being reaffirmed through events like The Ocean Race. "This event seeks to position Cartagena as a reference city in the Mediterranean," she added. She also praised the city's Yacht Port for its recent achievements, including "the Q for Quality and the S for Sustainability."
“The arrival of the IMOCA fleet, with its impressive 'flying' boats, will be a unique spectacle, but this event is much more than a sailing competition, because a complete programme of activities will also be developed on land,” said the mayor.
Minister of Tourism Carmen María Conesa took the opportunity to highlight "Cartagena as the capital of nautical tourism in the Region" during the celebration of the Day of the Region of Murcia at FITUR, thanks in part to its capacity to host events such as the Ocean Race Europe.
The Ocean Race Europe 2025 will sail under the motto ‘Connecting Europe’, starting on August 10 from Kiel, Germany, in the Baltic Sea. The route will continue through the North Sea and the English Channel, before crossing the Atlantic Ocean and finishing in the Mediterranean. Up to five ports of call are planned, making it a truly international event.
