ARCHIVED - On May 11 speed limits will change on urban roads across Spain
Be aware, although some signage has been replaced, in most cases there will be no visual indication that the speed limits have been reduced
On Tuesday May 11 changes to the speed limits in urban areas will come into force, six months after Spain’s central government approved a regulation to lower speed limits across the country, giving councils time to put in place the new measures and replace signage.
Although tens of thosuands of signs have been changed, there are many hundreds of thousands more roads which are not signposted, but will still be subject to the new restrictions, so from Tuesday take particular care when driving in any urban areas as the new limits will be enforced.
The traffic department will inevitably be undertaking an informative campaign out on the roads for the first few days in order to ensure that the public is fully aware of the changes, but after that, speed cameras will be busy enforcing the law.
The changes:
From May 11 2021, urban roads with one lane of traffic in each direction will be limited to 30 kilometres an hour, while one way roads with pavements will be limited to 20 kilometres an hour.
Those with two or more lanes of traffic in each direction will remain at 50 kilometres an hour.
The changes aim to reduce the number of pedestrian deaths in urban areas as well as improve safety for cyclists.
