The man, who suffered severe burns in the blast on January 30, 2025, passed away this Tuesday February 11 at the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital in Murcia city.
Sources confirmed that despite receiving urgent medical care at the hospital complex, the man was unable to recover from his injuries. His passing has reportedly deeply affected colleagues at the factory, which is operated by Rheinmetall, a German multinational company.
In a statement, the factory’s works council expressed their grief: “At this painful time, we would like to extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends and all those who had the privilege of working with him. We know that he was a very dear person to all of us and his absence will leave a void in our team. During this difficult time, we ask you to offer your support and understanding to those in need. We thank you for your respect and solidarity at this difficult time.”
The explosion left five other people injured with varying degrees of severity. Emergency services, including three 061 ambulances with medical personnel, attended to the victims and transported them to both the Arrixaca and the Morales Meseguer hospitals. The injured suffered from burns and smoke inhalation.
The factory, founded in the 18th century, has a history of industrial accidents. A similar explosion occurred a year ago, injuring two workers with burns due to a deflagration caused by solvents. That incident was reported to the Institute for Health and Safety at Work.
The cause of the latest incident is still under investigation. Authorities and company representatives are now under increased pressure to ensure that safety measures are reinforced to prevent further tragedies at the site.
