ARCHIVED - Onion days return to Spain with fluctuating temperatures: weather forecast Feb 10-12
Warm weather will return to Spain during the day but the nights will remain bitterly cold this weekend
The last blusters of Storm Isaak have burned themselves out and the coming week will be marked by some extremes in temperatures throughout Spain. Often called the ‘onion days’ because we strip off layers of clothing at noon only to begin to wrap back up in the evening, this weekend will be characterised by very warm days that will descend into freezing nights.
A continental polar air front and cold winds from the Mediterranean pulled the day-time temperatures to sub-zero levels earlier this week and brought heavy rainfall and intense frosts to the east of the country.
The storm began to lose strength as it moved west on February 9 but some of this instability will remain in the southeast on Friday February 10, where it will be mostly overcast with a chance of rain, particularly in Andalucia.
The mercury will climb to the low 20s in the Canary Islands and in northern Spain but little change will be noticed elsewhere, and early morning frosts will still be in evidence in the extreme south.
Easterly winds will bring a chill factor, especially in coastal areas, with Andalucia under an orange alert for gusts.
The first layers of the onion will begin to be shed on Saturday February 11 and the real cold days will disappear. According to Aemet, the thermometers will rise throughout the country with Seville expecting to reach highs of 22ºC.
Nighttime temperatures will remain low, between 3 and 5 degrees below normal in northern areas. Thermometers could drop to a minimum of -4º C, causing intense frosts.
Saturday will be marked by cloudy intervals in the southeast without ruling out some weak rainfall, more likely in mountainous areas of eastern Andalucia.
Eleven communities including Valencia maintain weather warnings for low temperatures.
The mercury will rise to more usual February temperatures on Sunday the 12th and the day will be largely bright and sunny with possible high clouds in the south.
Morning mists and fog banks are likely along the Mediterranean coast while night frosts will hit mountainous areas of the southeast.
East and southeasterly winds will prevail throughout Spain, leaving Andalucia on orange alert for high waves.
