ARCHIVED - Ouigo to launch high-speed link between Alicante and Madrid this summer
The low-cost rail operator will run two daily trains between Alicante city and Spain's capital
Just days after high-speed rail operator Ouigo launched its 'Pink Day' cut-price ticket promotion between Valencia, Madrid and Barcelona, the company has announced a new Alicante-Madrid connection from summer 2023.
From the "second quarter of the year", Ouigo will connect Alicante and Spain's capital with two daily frequencies in each direction, offering 28,000 seats a week.
Ouigo's general director Hélène Valenzuela outlined the operator's transport plans during a meeting with president of the Provincial Council of Alicante, Carlos Mazón, on Monday.
Mazón said the rail connection is "important to Alicante" as a "fundamental axis to increase tourist and business flows" between the city and Madrid "thanks to the operator's advantageous prices and quality".
"The arrival of Ouigo from the second quarter of 2023 will establish a continuous and sustained flow of travel between Alicante and Madrid, with the consequent economic benefits for our productive sectors
"We are delighted. Any initiative that favours the development of our province is welcome", added the provincial president.
The Alicante-Madrid line will be the company's third route in Spain, "a crucial pivot to boost the region's economy" and will have one stop in Albacete.
And Ouigo has assured that its connections in Spain "will have an impact on the decarbonisation policy of Alicante's economy", as its trains - with 509 seats in a single unit - are between 50 and 80 times less pollutant than the car and aeroplane respectively.
"Ouigo will finally allow tourists and business people to travel easily and cheaply between Alicante and Madrid and link up with other destinations throughout Spain at the Madrid hub," said the company's general manager.
The rail firm began operating in Spain in May 2021 with the Madrid-Zaragoza-Tarragona-Barcelona line and, since then, with the inclusion of the Valencia line last October, has transported more than 4.35 million passengers, with an average occupancy rate of over 93%.
