ARCHIVED - Passengers trapped upside down as Madrid roller coaster stops in its tracks
The visitors were left hanging 50 metres in the air for more than an hour at the popular Spanish theme park
If theme parks are designed to provide thrills and excitement, then a handful of unfortunate visitors to Madrid’s Parque de Atracciones certainly got plenty of bang for their buck on Wednesday August 4 when they were trapped at the top of a roller coaster for more than an hour.
Ten people climbed aboard the ‘Abismo’, a ride that promises an adrenalin rush like no other, travelling at 105 kilometres per hour and plummeting backwards from a height of more than 50 metres. But the visitors got a little more exhilaration than they were bargaining for when they car they were in stopped dead on the tracks completely vertical, leaving them facing up to the sky.
A failure in the mechanism meant that the passengers were unable to move and had to wait for more than an hour, even as the amusement park wound down for the day around them, until staff eventually fixed the problem.
All of the visitors were brought down safely and no injuries were reported.
