Petrol and diesel prices in Spain continue to drop

Fuel prices in Spain took a nosedive last week following the Hamas attack on Israel, and diesel maintained its more comfortable position of a few cents cheaper than petrol. Thankfully, this trend looks set to continue and both fuels have dropped once again.

After registering its first price drop in more than three months a week ago, a litre of diesel has fallen by a further 1.5% on Thursday October 19 to stand at 1.656 cents per litre. At the same time, petrol now costs 1.679 euros at the pumps, which represents a dip of 2.3%.

Needless to say, both fuels are still more expensive than before the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the contrast is striking. Back on February 24, 2022, a litre of diesel would have set you back 1.479 euros while petrol cost as little as 1.594 euros.

At the current prices, filling an average 55-litre tank with petrol today will cost an average of 92.34 euros, almost 7 euros above the 85.63 it would have cost this time last year. But, of course, that’s when the government’s 20-cent per litre discount was still in play.

On the other hand, the same tank of diesel will amount to a bill of around 91.08 euros at most filling stations, which is actually 5.11 euros less than the same period of 2022.

And so, with the latest data, the price of diesel remains below that of unleaded for the 35th consecutive week.

It also means that Spain is still well below the average of both the EU and the eurozone for diesel and petrol.
