ARCHIVED - Plaza Bohemia in La Manga del Mar Menor to be extended with a new boulevard
Cartagena council is focusing on improving the infrastructure of the Mar Menor area using EU FEDER funding
The local council in Cartagena has approved plans to extend Plaza Bohemia in La Manga del Mar Menor by adding 30 new parking spaces and nearly 1,200 metres of pedestrian area, with a budget of around 370,000 euros.
The project includes transforming the road next to Plaza Bohemia into a pedestrian boulevard, to facilitate cultural activities, such as street theatre, “summer cinema” and various courses, without interfering with the popular crafts market that traditionally takes place there during the summer months.
Furthermore, the new boulevard will be integrated into the existing square and will have green zones and shaded areas with pergolas, to give shade on even the hottest of days and there is even a possibility that extra elements to alleviate the heat will be installed, such as micro-sprinklers.
A representative from the council has said that the aim of this project is to promote commercial and social activity while also favouring sustainable mobility by adding more space for bicycles or pedestrians.
The new pedestrian area will have a children’s play area and a new bike rack, and there will also be space for taxis and a bus stop, as well as 30 new parking spaces, including 3 disabled parking spots and 1 space reserved for electric cars.
In addition, the project will also include improvements to the lighting installations in Plaza Bohemia.
As the project is part of the EDUSI, La Manga Abierta 365 initiative, it is being financed almost completely by the European Fund of Regional Development (FEDER), which is providing about 80% of the total cost.
