ARCHIVED - Poacher caught with rifle and a dozen dead birds in Elche
The suspect was hunting thrushes illegally in Calle Las Canteras when he was caught red-handed by Elche police

A poacher faces a fine of up to 3,000 euros after Elche Local Police found a rifle and a dozen dead birds in his vehicle.
The 51-year-old was caught red-handed when a motorbike patrol spotted him placing an object on the ground close to his car in Calle Las Canteras, arousing suspicion.
When officers approached the suspect, they noticed the object was wrapped in a T-shirt and searched the hunter's vehicle where they discovered a cage and a bag concealing a dozen dead thrushes. The poacher claimed he was going to eat them.
The birds and rifle were confiscated and the suspect faces charges of carrying a weapon in an inadequate manner and hunting without a licence, offences which carry fines of between 300 and 3,000 euros.
The poacher could also lose his gun licence and be temporarily disqualified from applying for a new one.
