Police confiscate 100,000 products from supermarkets because their labels are not in Spanish
The Guardia Civil have seized 118,000 food and cosmetic products in the provinces of Albacete, Alicante, Almería and Murcia

Fiscal and Border police belonging to the Spanish Civil Guard have confiscated a total of 118,000 food and cosmetic products ready for sale in Albacete, Alicante, Murcia and Almería that didn’t have labels in Spanish.
According to a police press release, the products were in “a well-known supermarket chain” and had violated the regulatory regulations on labelling.
A total of 16 inspections were carried out in different establishments of the affected supermarket chain in the southeast of Spain, leading officers to seize several different brands of products, all of which were ready for direct sale to the public.
The company that owns the supermarket chain, which was not named, has been issued 32 separate fines for failing to comply with the law that says such products sold in Spain must have the labels written in Spanish.

Spain’s Royal Decree 85/2018, of February 23, in its article 6, dedicated to the language of labelling and the information file, states that “the labelling information must appear in Spanish” for cosmetic products that are kept in Spanish territory.
Similarly, Royal Decree 1334/1999, of July 31, in its article 18, states “the mandatory indications on the labeling of food products marketed in Spain will be expressed, at least, in the official Spanish language of the State”.
These laws are in place so that consumers are “aware at all times, in a clear and understandable manner, of the content of the products they purchase, in order to avoid, among others, possible health problems such as poisoning and allergic reactions derived from its use or consumption,” according to police.
