ARCHIVED - Police rescue lost pony wandering alongside busy Alicante road
Residents spotted the pony at risk of being run over in Alicante city on the Costa Blanca.
A loose pony wandering alongside a busy road in Alicante has been rescued by the Local Police and taken to a shelter while efforts are made to find its owner.
The animal was spotted looking quite disorientated and at risk of being run over by residents on Avenida Padre Ángel Escapa at around 6.30pm on Wednesday, June 16.
They contacted the police and two patrols were sent to the area where they managed to find and reassure the animal, tying it to a lamppost temporarily to safeguard both the pony and motorists.
Despite being lost and alone, the animal was in good physical condition, well-fed and with no obvious lesions of any kind.
A city council Animal Protection Officer was called to transfer the pony to a rescue centre where it is being cared for while police try to locate the owners, suspecting it may have escaped from a nearby farm.
Earlier this week, emergency services in Orihuela, within the Vega Baja comarca were tasked with the unusual challenge of rescuing a portly pup whose head had become wedged between concrete balustrade supports.
