ARCHIVED - Renfe rail workers announce strikes in October and November in Spain
The work stoppages will affect thousands of passengers in Spain during the holidays
On October 19, hundreds of rail workers marched on the Congress of Deputies in Madrid in a mass rally against their employer, Renfe. Negotiations to improve working conditions have ended in stalemate, and the three unions representing staff have called for strikes in October and November that will affect the Cercanías, Rodalíes and mid-distance train services.
The UGT union has accused the Renfe Group of “unilaterally and deliberately blocking collective bargaining” which is causing “serious damage to the entire workforce”. The union has released a statement claiming that they are seeking a solution to the conflict, but that they will not allow “the company to continue to neglect the negotiation without providing solutions to the problems and interests of the workforce.”
The main demands of workers are straight-forward and long-standing: they want the Spanish rail company to employ more staff, since the current levels are “insufficient” to cover the workloads. In addition, they have requested that certain jobs are no longer outsourced.
They have also called for the activation of the III Collective Agreement, which would increase their salaries in line with inflation.
The Renfe strike has been called on the following dates:
- Friday October 28: from 12am to 11pm
- Monday November 7: from 6am to 9am and from 6pm to 8pm
- Friday November 11: from 6am to 9am and from 6pm to 8pm
The Ministry of Transport will insist that Renfe has to operate a minimum number of services to mitigate the disruption somewhat, but thousands of passengers will be affected nonetheless. The strikes have been strategically planned to coincide with rush hour and the first day of industrial action, October 28, is the beginning of the All Saints long weekend in Madrid.
The specific trains affected by the work stoppages are expected to be confirmed by the Ministry in the next couple of days.
