Russian fugitive wanted over multimillion-euro oil scam arrested in Orihuela Costa
The suspect allegedly fled to Alicante after being sentenced to ten years in prison for fraud

A man wanted in connection with a multimillion-euro fraud case in Russia has been arrested in Orihuela Costa following a coordinated international police operation.
National Police officers detained the suspect after locating him in the coastal area of Alicante province, where investigators believe he had been hiding after fleeing his home country.
The arrest was carried out after Russian authorities issued an international arrest warrant, later supported by a European Arrest Warrant, indicating that the fugitive may have been living in Spain.
Police launched an investigation to track down the suspect once intelligence suggested he had taken refuge on the Costa Blanca. Officers eventually identified his whereabouts and carried out a targeted operation that led to his arrest.
According to the warrant, the man is accused of creating a business network linked to the fictitious buying and selling of oil. Through this scheme, Russian authorities say he defrauded more than 2.6 billion rubles, approximately €26 million.
He is also suspected of laundering funds through associated companies connected to the alleged fraud.
Authorities in Russia reportedly sentenced him to ten years in prison for these offences, after which he fled the country.
The National Police have highlighted the importance of international cooperation in locating and detaining the suspect, noting that the operation was made possible through information sharing between law enforcement agencies across different countries.
Following his arrest in Orihuela Costa, the man has been placed at the disposal of the Central Court of Instruction of the National Court, which will handle extradition proceedings.
