ARCHIVED - Ryanair cabin crew in Spain announce strikes in June and July
Spanish cabin crew will strike for 6 days over pay and working conditions
After months of talks regarding working conditions and pay, unions representing Ryanair cabin crew in Spain have announced that staff will go on strike for six days in late June and early July this year.
While UK Ryanair staff have not confirmed industrial action, Spanish destinations will be affected by the work stoppages on June 24, 25, 26 and 30 as well as July 1 and 2.
Last week, the SITCPLA and USO labour unions slammed the budget airline for refusing to dialogue with cabin crew and said they had been left with “no other option” but to strike.
The news will come as just the latest below for holidaymakers, who have experienced delayed and cancelled flights on a weekly basis from UK airports as well as queues of up to four hours to navigate passport control once landed in Spain.
It is not yet clear how many flights in Spain will be affected, but the USO confirmed that the unions are “coordinating our actions with European counterparts,” suggesting that the travel chaos could travel much further afield.
Before the strike action was announced, Ryanair claimed that it had negotiated collective agreements covering 90% of its staff across Europe, and that in Spain, the airline had agreed terms “with CCOO, Spain’s largest and most representative union, delivering improvements for Spanish-based cabin crew and reinforcing Ryanair’s commitment to the welfare of its cabin crew.
“These announcements by the much smaller USO and SITCPLA unions are a distraction from their own failures to deliver agreements after three years of negotiations and we believe that any strikes they call will not be supported by our Spanish crews,” a company spokesperson said.
General secretary of USO's Ryanair section, Lidia Arasanz, confirmed the strike action by Spanish cabin crew in a statement.
She said: “We have to resume mobilisation so that the reality of our situation is known and Ryanair is forced to abide by basic labour laws.”
