Ryanair charges tourists 45 euros to bring pastry on Spanish flight
The Balearic Islands government has called an urgent meeting with the airline to resolve the issue
Two unlucky passengers quickly lost their appetites this week when Ryanair tried to charge them a steep 45 euros each for carrying pastries on board a flight from the Balearic Islands. The tourists had purchased a couple of ensaïmadas, traditional Mallorcan pastries, before arriving at Palma Airport, but the airline demanded a payment for the ‘extra carry-on’.
Ryanair claimed the travellers were exceeding their hand luggage limit by taking the desserts on board and after a lengthy row the passengers dumped the cakes rather than forking out for the fee.
Following the incident, the Balearic Island government has called an urgent meeting between the pastry-makers’ association and Ryanair, whose policy it claims is damaging local artisan bakeries.
Tourism Minister Iago Negueruela insisted the meeting is vital “in order to defend local produce and avoid any kind of discrimination.”
Pep Magraner, the president of the Balearic Islands pastry-makers association, highlighted the fact that passengers are allowed to carry on board ensaïmadas that they purchase in the duty free, but not those bought from other bakeries on the island.
“All the other airlines allow passengers to take two ensaïmadas on board,” Magraner said. “It’s only a problem with Ryanair, but we’re talking about a lot of flights, especially to the Spanish mainland, which is the destination of most of the ensaïmadas.”
Ryanair has long been known for its strict luggage rules and along with Vueling, the airline is currently up in front of consumers affairs in Spain for charging exorbitant excess baggage fees.
In 2022, the Balearics filed similar charges against easyJet, Eurowings and Volotea.
