ARCHIVED - Ryanair hopes to lead recovery in Spain with 50 million passengers this year
The Irish airline has secured 80% of its fuel, which it claims will keep flight prices to Spain low
On the celebration of its 20th anniversary in Spain, Irish budget carrier Ryanair hopes to lead the recovery of the tourism sector by reaching 50 million passengers by the end of this fiscal year, exceeding the pre-pandemic 46.6 million travellers flown in 2019.
To achieve its aim, Michael O’ Leary’s company has signed contracts with Boeing to acquire 210 new planes over the next five years, 50 of which will be destined for the Spanish market. As a result, the total number of employees is forecast to grow from 6,000 to 10,000, at a rate of between 800 and 1,000 staff per year.
Ryanair plans to fill the void left by companies like Thomas Cook and Norwegian in Spain to increase its operations, and the airline has already announced five new routes to Spanish airports in Barcelona, Madrid, Alicante, Girona and Castellon this summer.
In an effort to “reopen new bases but take advantage of the existing ones,” Ryanair CEO DAC Eddie Wilson has revealed that he is in talks with the government of the Canary Islands to reopen bases on four of the islands, in addition to evaluating extra routes to and from Menorca, Cantabria and Galicia.
With many airlines warning that ticket prices could be bumped up this summer due to rising fuel costs, Mr O’ Leary confirmed this week that Ryanair has already purchased 80% of the jet fuel needed until the end of fiscal year in March 2023, which should allow them to maintain their current prices.
Moreover, the CEO has warned that other popular companies such as Wizz Air, easyJet and Iberia have failed to secure their fuel at lower prices, and so will likely hike up ticket costs.
