Ryanair wins the right to charge for cabin bags in Spain
A Spanish court has ruled that airlines may set their own luggage policies
Passengers will be limited to tiny free carry-ons or forced to pay for extra luggage, at least for the time being, as a court in Spain has voted in favour of Ryanair’s right to set its own cabin bag policies and prices.
Back in October, the European Parliament unanimously voted on the need for all airlines to have common hand luggage allowances, but nothing has yet been passed into law.
Ryanair was by far the most outspoken carrier against this measure but the game is far from over. Following the latest ruling, Strasbourg is putting pressure on the EU to approve regulations that establish common rules on cabin luggage that all airlines must accept.
“We are allowed to set the prices of our products, it is a fundamental right under European law. There is not enough space inside the plane for everyone to carry a carry-on suitcase and another under their seat, so we limit it so that those who want to have the convenience of carrying an additional bag can take it,” Ryanair CEO Eddie Wilson said this week.
In 2022, three separate Spanish courts condemned Ryanair’s “abusive” carry-on luggage policies, while other budget airlines like Vueling and easyJet also came under fire.
Going forward, the EU has committed to coming up with measures that will be common across all low-cost airlines based on the fact that hand luggage is “an indispensable right of the passenger” which they shouldn’t be forced to pay extra for.
At the moment, to avoid additional charges, Ryanair passengers can only carry on a small personal bag measuring no more than 40 x 20 x 25 centimetres, which much fit under the seat in front.
