ARCHIVED - Same dogs, same law: animal rights activists in Spain protest with body of dead greyhound
The group is pressuring the Spanish government to include working dogs in the new Animal Welfare Law
In a hard-hitting protest against certain aspects of Spain’s new Animal Protection Law, activists demonstrated in front of Congress this week carrying the corpse of a dead greyhound on a Spanish flag.
Wearing masks depicting President Sanchez and other high-profile councillors, the animal activists demanded that the legislation be amended to include hunting and working dogs, to afford them the same protection rights as other domestic pets.
This is arguably the most contentious issue surrounding the bill and the protest took place on the same day as a closed door meeting to discuss the matter.
The coordinator of Animanaturalis in Madrid, Jaime Posada, has accused the government of bowing to the “political lobby” of hunters, who have been battling for months to keep their animals separate from the rights legislation that is designed to better protect domestic dogs.

The controversial law will ban euthanasia in all but the most extreme cases, put tighter controls on backyard breeding and impose harsher penalties for animal mistreatment, abuse and neglect. Regulations that, for the moment, will ignore working dogs.
In their line of work, the activists point out that they are faced with “the cruelty” suffered by hunting dogs on a daily basis, who are frequently “beaten, mutilated and terrified.”
According to the protestors, the dead greyhound had been run over and left thrown in a ditch. On either side of the dog are posters, one reading “Same dogs, same law.” The other features a dog hanging by the neck from the logo of the socialist party, which is in favour of excluding hunting animals from the legislation.
